Get active off the ice this summer and help raise funds for all men's cancers
Join the 12th annual Alterna Do It For Dad! event on Father's Day - Sunday, June 20, 2010.
The Alterna Do It For Dad! Family Run and Walk is one of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation's most successful fundraising events. It features both 10km and 5km timed events, and a 2km Family Walk. Each year more than 1,500 participants of all ages lace up their running shoes for this event. To date the event has raised more than $1.6 million for cancer research and patient care in our community.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society 45% of men will develop the disease in their lifetime. While prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among Canadian men with 1 in 7 diagnosed, other forms of the disease are having a major impact as well.
The Alterna Do It For Dad! event will continue to raise funds for prostate cancer research and provide important seed funding for innovative cancer research projects in local labs. Funds will also support translational research - the process of taking discoveries made in the lab and shaping them into potential new treatments.
Alterna Do It For Dad! funds will also be used for cancer awareness and prevention programs - including the development of the testicular Cancer Education program for teens - Check 'Em.
New this year, Alterna Do It For Dad! funds will be earmarked for the CyberKnife - a state-of-the-art radiation tool. It is the world's first and only robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors throughout the body. The CyberKnife can pinpoint tumors and treat them without the need for surgery or length recovery periods.
