History was made in the most exhilarating fashion on Monday, September 18, when Minnesota selected USA’s Taylor Heist first overall in the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) Draft in Toronto! The selection was announced by iconic tennis legend and women's sports advocate Billie Jean King. Admitting she does not yet know much about hockey, Billie Jean King has been a huge Investor and champion of the new professional hockey league. A true trailblazer in her own right, she shared the following before the big reveal:
"A trailblazer is one that blazes a trail to lead and include others, the first person to do something or go somewhere who shows that it is also possible for other people. Trailblazing is bold, it's brave, and it can be very scary and lonely...But it's worth it. It's really worth it. It's worth it for each one of us who have fought so hard for this day. And it's worth it for the generations of girls and women who will come behind us."
With franchises in Boston, Montreal, Minnesota, New York, Ottawa and Toronto, 90 players heard their names called, setting ablaze the dreams of countless young girls who aspire to make their mark in the world of hockey. Elite defensemen were selected early and often in the draft, welcomed to rosters that already included three players selected during free agency. Get ready for a season filled with unrivalled action as training camp starts the week of November 13!
