We chatted with Tournament Committee Member Mike Wehrwein to learn more about Western Canada's Premiere Old Timer's Hockey Tournament and the Lethbridge Oldtimers Sports Association (LOSA)'s long history in the game.

We’re excited by the news that the tournament is back with a new name! What is the history of the event?

The idea came about while the city and surrounding area was preparing to host the 2nd Annual National Oldtimers Hockey Tournament. That tournament was held in February of 1976, and we continued to host the tournament for the next 30+ years!

LOSA’s roots are tied directly in with a tournament. Can you tell us more about LOSA?

Lethbridge Oldtimers Sports Association (LOSA) was established in 1975. The idea came about while the city and surrounding area was preparing to host the 2nd Annual National Oldtimers Hockey Tournament.

LOSA founders, while busy helping to plan and host the tournament, decided to form a recreational league in Lethbridge and enter teams in Nationals.

The original philosophy was one that put emphasis on family and social events as well as recreation. There were many non-playing members, and all levels of hockey skill were encouraged to join.

By 1987, LOSA expanded to 6 teams and sometime around 1992-93 grew to 8 teams. Currently we have eight night-league teams and four day-league teams.
